Back Pain Treatments and Tips That Work

My name is Jason Dawson and if you have chronic back pain, I'm glad that you've found my blog. After an accident, I suffered with back pain for several years until I started visiting a chiropractor. I could tell a difference in the severity of my back pain after only a few treatments. I continued seeing the chiropractor on a regular basis and today my back pain is gone. When I had excruciating back pain, I couldn't enjoy any physical activities and some days I could barely walk. I'm writing this blog so that I can help others who have back pain. In my blog you'll learn about chiropractors and how they can help you. You'll also learn some things that you can do at home that will lessen the pain in your back.

Homemade Herbal Oil Liniment For Soothing Sore Neck And Back Muscles Between Chiropractor Visits

by Nandy Dannenberg

If you suffer from a neck or back injury, you may visit a chiropractor to help relieve your symptoms and realign your spine. However, you may find that your muscles sometimes become sore between visits. If so, use the following herbal oil liniment to soothe your achy muscles until your next appointment.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following supplies and ingredients.

  • Small microwavable bowl
  • One toothpick
  • 10 drops of olive oil
  • 8 drops of camphor
  • 5 drops of lavender oil
  • Microwave
  • Small washcloth or hand towel

The olive oil serves as a carrier oil for the other ingredients in the liniment. The camphor oil gives the preparation a menthol effect, giving you a cooling sensation that helps reduce inflammation and relaxes the muscles. It also helps reduce swelling by improving circulation to the muscles and preventing blood from pooling in the area.

The lavender oil provides a natural pain reliever. It also helps relax tight, tense muscles.

Directions

Once you have everything you need, follow the directions below for making and using your homemade herbal oil liniment.

  1. Pour the olive oil into the bowl.
  2. Add the camphor oil and mix well using the toothpick.
  3. Add the lavender oil and repeat mixing with the toothpick until the oils are well combined.
  4. Place the bowl in your microwave and heat the mixture at 50 percent heat for 15 seconds. The oil should be warm to the touch without being hot enough to burn your skin. If it is not warm enough, place it back in and heat for an additional 5 seconds. Repeat until the oil is comfortably warm.
  5. Put a small amount of the oil into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. If you cannot reach the area on your back that needs relief, have your significant other do this for you.
  6. Smear the skin with the oil, then rub gently until the oil is absorbed into the skin.
  7. Soak your washcloth or hand towel with warm water and wring it out.
  8. Place the cloth over the area. The moist heat helps speed up the absorption of the oils and helps relax the muscles.
  9. Leave the cloth on until it becomes cool, about five minutes.
  10. Remove the cloth and let the skin air dry.

Using the above liniment two or three times a day can help alleviate your neck and muscle soreness. However, if you start having more frequent spasms between your appointments, you may want to ask a chiropractic service like University Physical Medicine for recommendations on how to ease the discomfort.
