Three Common Sources Of Neck Pain, And How To Address Them

Neck pain can make performing even basic, everyday activities a real chore. If you are suffering from neck pain, whether it be dull and aching or sharp and painful, it is essential that you work to identify the source so that you can treat the pain properly and start along the road to recovery. Here's a look at three common sources of neck pain, and what can be done to address each one.

Muscle Pain

Did your neck pain arise seemingly out of nowhere? Perhaps you woke up with it, or maybe it developed at the end of what seemed to be a normal, long day. This type of neck pain is generally caused by muscle fatigue. Your actions or posture may be placing more than the normal amount of strain on the muscles in your neck, leading to inflammation and soreness. Change your habits, and the muscle pain will likely subside. Some suggested changes are:

  • Sleeping with a firm supportive pillow.
  • Keeping your head back against the head rest while driving.
  • Avoiding staring at the computer screen for hours on end, and ensuring you keep your shoulders back and head forward when doing so.

Ligament Pain

Your ligaments connect the various bones in your neck. Usually, they don't become injured unless there is some sort of trauma to your neck area. This could be a car accident or other event that causes your head to snap back or forward quickly. It could be a sports accident in which your head or neck is hit with a ball. If your pain arose after some sort of accident or trauma (even if it took a day or two after the incident to develop), then it's likely due to a ligament injury.

Most ligament injuries will heal in time, but supportive therapies like chiropractic care and physical therapy are important for speeding recovery.

Vertebral Misalignment

When the muscles in your neck remain tense and strained for a long period of time, they may push or pull your vertebra out of alignment. This can put pressure on your spinal nerves, causing symptoms like tingling down the arms, a chronic stiff neck, and inability to turn your head all of the way to one side.

Your chiropractor can correct a vertebral misalignment in the neck with a simple adjustment. However, he or she will also recommend lifestyle changes that will help keep your vertebra from becoming misaligned again. This may include changing your posture, doing certain exercises, and avoiding certain activities.
